Soren's Dad (According to Soren)

My daddy is 500 years old.

He weighs 40 lbs and is as tall as mom.

His hair is blond and his eyes are blue.

He loves to relax by taking naps and he likes to wear his striped shirt.

He loves to cook bacon.

His favorite household chore is let me put away stuff but I don't like to put away stuff.

His favorite TV show is Cars and his favorite song is Twinkle Twinkle.

Daddy always tells me put away my toys.

He loves to buy me fruit rollups.

If he could go on a trip he would go to Canada.

My dad likes fruit rollups.

Anything else? My dad likes to fly on jet airplanes because they go so fast and I like to fly on airplanes.

Thomas the Tank Engine

Every year we go to see Thomas the Tank Engine when he comes to the Mt. Hood Railroad. This year it was great that Grandpa was able to join us.

Of course, Sir Topham Hatt was there to be sure the engines were all behaving.

I love this event because they have so many things to do...bouncy house, petting zoo, run-through maze, Thomas movies, live music, gift shop, balloon toys. Oh, and of course some tracks and trains that you can play with...

hood river 073ed

...not that Soren has any interest in playing with trains...

hood river 076ed

...I mean, he has his own trains and tracks....

hood river 079ed

...so he wouldn't spend hours playing with just another set of Thomas tracks, right?

hood river 081ed

It was a bit tricky sometimes though because there were piles of kids all trying to play with the same trains and on the same tracks...and some might not be quite as skilled in the sharing department. Here, Soren is shouting "hey!" as another child tried to get in the way of his engine's progress.

The main focus of the event is the ride on the train pulled by Thomas himself.

hood river 132ed

It was a cozy ride through some beautiful scenery.

hood river 153ed

Soren was mesmerized.

hood river 184ed

He looked out the window the whole time, both to watch the passing sites...

hood river 192ed

...and in hopes of catching a glimpse of Thomas up ahead as he pulled us around the bend.

We're already looking forward to next year.

Showing Granpda Some of Oregon's Great Sites

We managed to drag Peter and Grandpa away from their many home improvement projects...

After stopping to see Thomas the Tank Engine in Hood River (more on that tomorrow...) we doubled-back around and headed up to Mt. Hood. Would you believe this was the first day of summer up at Timberline Lodge?!

Glad We Don't Swear in our House

Soren had a tantrum the other day. Fortunately (for my sanity) this doesn't happen often. But when it happens...watch out!

I don't even recall what exactly set it off. Something minor ususally, then he goes into time out where he gets really, really mad. When I checked back in a few minutes later he was completely worked up and angry. So, I left for awhile again.

On these tantrum occasions, like this particular day, he just gets madder and madder until he just can't really communicate anymore. So I leave him alone to calm down. By this time he had directed the anger entirely toward me.

The funny part - and believe me sometimes it is tough to find a funny part when he's such a beast - is that he was shouting at me from his timeout seat. Or rather, shouting about me since I wasn't sitting there to take it.

He really wanted to say something horrible to me. "You are a...a....a..." And here is where I am grateful that we don't swear at home. This saved me from a far worse ending to that sentence. Poor kid, you could almost hear the wheels of his mind spinning for the very worst thing he could call me. And it resulted in -

"You are a STINKY mama!

The other day, Soren and I were walking down the driveway to get the mail. We could see a person laying perfectly flat in the ditch across the street, their face pressed into the pipe that goes under the neighbor's driveway.

We went to investigate and found that our neighbor had discovered an abandoned litter of skunks living there. She called the animal rescue people who came out to catch them.

Did you know that baby skunks don't have teeth and don't have the ability to spray yet? I didn't know that, but once they told me that we actually crossed the road to check it out better.

The rescue people were working on getting the little skunks out of the pipe, but it wasn't an easy task. Especially since their pole wasn't quite long enough. This called for Peter to the rescue! He came out with his enormous expandable pole. With that and a big wad of rolled up t-shirts they were able to scoot the little guys out of the pipe.

Aren't they cute?!

The Rose Festival

You know, I've decided that inserting pretty much any old name in front of the word "festival"...

...means that we'll stand in lines...

...spend too much money...

...ride the same rides...

...as we rode at the ____ festival the week before...

...and have one VERY happy little boy in our family.

What Makes a Pirate?

Recently Soren was the very happy recipient of a sword-shaped balloon. (You know, the kind of balloons that they tie into all sorts of kid pleasing shapes?) He also got a balloon belt with a special spot to slide his sword.

As we were walking down the street he was busy playing with his sword, pretending to be a pirate. He called:

"Mom, look at me! I'm a pirate! Do I look like I'm from Somalia?"

I laughed pretty hard about that. And as we walked along I could hear him talking to himself:

"I'm a pirate! Pirates don't say please!"

Yep, that pretty much does sum it up, doesn't it. Pirates have some very bad manners.

Castles in the Sand

As I mentioned, lucky for Soren Peter isn't one for laying around on the beach.

neskowin beach 073ed

After getting their fill of Cheez-its the boys embarked on a building project.

neskowin beach 130ed

It required a lot of water, sand...

neskowin beach 100ed

...and rocks!

neskowin beach 168ed

Bringing in the heavy equipment speeded the project along though.

And after three hours of scooping, lifting and building...

...it was ready for the finishing touch.

The finished project...which likely is still standing on Neskowin beach.

One Purchase

Isn't it great when one purchase can bring so much happiness to two guys?

A Day in Neskowin

We love Neskowin on the Oregon coast.

neskowin beach 039ed

It is one of the closest, non-commercial spots near us. So we bring our own snacks.

neskowin beach 045ed

Soren keeps an eye on our stuff...

...just in case...

...he spots...

...Cheezit-loving birds!

And then he can relax again.

neskowin beach 213ed

To Soren's delight, Peter isn't one for just laying around at the beach.

Me, I'm fine with laying around.
