Quick Update: Peter and Eric, What's next?
After a few weeks of fast and furious posts, now that they are both in a safe location, there is a little less to say and not quite the need to send so many updates. But I'll continue to post updates when I have them.
Eric is in base camp and hoping to catch a helicopter out. He hoped that would happen today, but it is blizzard/whiteout conditions even in base camp right now, so no helicopters can fly. Maybe tomorrow.
Peter is settled in at the Kathmandu Guesthouse, an iconic hotel in Kathmandu. He says there are only about 6 guests staying there. Kathmandu is on strict covid lockdown, but stores are open on an extremely limited basis for a few hours in the morning. He is able to go out for a little while during that time. He never fails to tell me about what he's eating whenever we talk.
All flights are cancelled, but the US Embassy is working on special repatriation charters to get US citizens home. It is looking promising that he might be able to get on one in a few days. Hopefully, Eric will be able to get on the same flight.
The time difference is ideal at the moment, because I can talk to Peter at the beginning and end of every day. There are so many stories! All of the things I've posted on the blog make it feel like we kind of know what happened. But with almost everything I ask about there are wonderful, rich details that I hadn't known.
They have had such an adventure.
