How will tomorrow unfold?

We expect that Peter's and Eric's team will make a new assessment in the morning about whether it is time to try again for Camp 3.

Here's some indications of what the other teams are thinking:

  • Madison Mountaineering stayed put at Camp 3 and says they'll go to South Col (Camp 4) tomorrow.
  • CTSS has teams at Camp 2 and Camp 3 and says that they expect to move each of them up a level tomorrow.
  • IMG is at Camp 2 and plans to move to Camp 3 tomorrow. They say they see "a promising forecast over the next 4 days".
  • Mountain Professionals (from Boulder) plans to go to Camp 3 on May 23 and try for the summit on May 25.
  • One of the teams who is still waiting at Base Camp reports that the teams at Camp 2 have had "endless wind and no wifi". :-) (Amy note: They never have wifi at Camp 2, hahaha.)
  • If you're interested in reading more reports, here's a good roundup from today

Here's some video footage from Camp 1 in the past few days:

Meteorologist Karl Gabl of Innsbruck shared this forecast with ExplorersWeb:
“A cyclone will form over the Bay of Bengal in the next few days and it will reach the coast of India on the evening of May 26,” he said. “The center of the cyclone will move west over India and will lose strength continuously till the 28th.
“This cyclone will not directly influence the area around Mount Everest but between May 25 and 28, the models show snow and less sunshine. Because of this, May 23 would be a better time to summit.”
There will be no further summit chances later. The Icefall Doctors have confirmed to Alan Arnette that the route will close by May 29.
In this situation, teams currently below the Khumbu Icefall must either hurry up quickly starting today or risk a summit push during the second cyclone next week. Whatever happens, it will all come down in the next few days.
