They're at Base Camp!
I woke up in the middle of the night and checked on GPS tracker to see where the expedition was. They blew right past Gorak Shep which had been on their itinerary for the night and were clearly headed towards Everest Base Camp. Such a milestone in the expedition! From what I can see, it looks like they are now at base camp, at about 17,600 feet.
I'd been hopeful that communication would be good from base camp, but I've read reports that people have been struggling with it, some saying that they have to go up to a ridge to send/receive signals. We'll see if that improves as they are there for a while.
This morning, Alan Arnette, a mountaineer who is covering the Everest 2021 season on his Web site, just released a **video** interview with Eric Gran, Peter's climbing partner. Looks like they recorded it about 12 hours ago before they set off on today's hike, so... hot off the press! What an absolute delight!
