Messages from Peter, GPS tracks, + other notes and video
The GPS tracker that they have also allows them to send short messages. Here are a few pieces of information I've gotten from Peter today and yesterday:
- Catching our breath after doing anything is hard.
- Moderate crowds, not a real problem.
- Feeling hungover and achy during the night but good during the day.
- Packing for C2
From Alan Arnette: The rope fixing teams reached the South Col (Camp 4). I expect the summit in a few days.
I can see that they did make it to Camp 2 today, taking about 5 hours to go from C1 to C2, roughly 2 miles.
From what I've read, Camp 2 has a bigger setup for most expeditions, large communal dining tent for the team and better cooking conditions and food than at Camp 1.
The Expedition company Climbing the Seven Summits has a really great 4-minute video on the transition from Camp 1 to Camp 2 if you're interested in what that is all about. (Also worth noting in the video are the red cords that this expedition leader has tied around his neck. Those are another indication of the Tibetan Buddhism that is practiced in this region. Those cords are given to people directly from a lama, usually during a ceremony. It is given for protection and blessings. Makes me smile to see visiting foreigners honor the local traditions so well.)
