23 April SummitClimb Dispatch

Sunny, warm, amazing day here at Everest Base Camp, located on the surface of the massive Khumbu Glacier, lying at the foot of Mount Everest. We are waiting for the newly fallen snow to melt and consolidate so we can safely ascend the Khumbu icefall up to Camp 1. Perhaps one more day and all will be ok.

Note from Amy: Peter called again last night! He said they hadn't gone up to Camp 1 as planned, but waited out the snowstorm in Base Camp. They now plan to go through the Icefall to Camp 1 today, starting at about 1 a.m. their time (so, Saturday afternoon our time.)

I asked if he was having fun and he says it just gets better and better as he feels stronger. He's feeling much better after a week in Base Camp (with higher day trips during that time). On those higher climbs, he mentioned that his usual technique to move slowly and steadily is serving him well. If you've ever climbed high with Peter, you're probably laughing knowing that he tells everyone to slow down.

He said the temperatures are extreme. Very cold at night and then when the sun is out, very hot during the day. He's rigged up a tarp over his tent so that he doesn't bake in there while resting in the afternoon.
