Oh How We Love the Country Fair!
This weekend was one of our very favorite events of the year. The annual Oregon Country Fair. It is a hard event to describe, more of a huge hippie love fest than any sort of typical fair. All sorts of beautiful handmade crafts, out of this world food, and incredible music. And people watching that is the best we've ever experienced! Friday is the least crowded day, so I took the day off so we could enjoy the festivities.
It has been going on for decades and has a reputation for lots of hippie-flavored things, like herbs (other than basil and rosemary if you know what I mean), and a definite clothing-optional flare. but while those aspects are still present I'd say the whole event is much more main stream and family friendly nowadays. Well, "family friendly" for families who don't mind the occasional guys walking around in loin clothes and girls wearing only flowing skirts and having their breats painted up as cherries, apples, or mangoes!
This year we were so lucky to get to see one of our new favorite local bands, the Maharimbas. We discovered them at a recent celebration at the local children's museum. Soren was absolutely mesmerized. He refused to dance at that event but just sat on my lap and watched them intensely - for almost an hour! This time he started in that mesmerized trance but we eventually talked him into some dancing!
And after lots of dancing, singing, and people watching we could retreat to the children's area and lay on our blanket and take break! What a great day.

That was the greatest video EVER. Soren was great, but I kept getting distracted by the crazy dancers! Love the girl who throws her hat to get more serious about her dancing.
ReplyDeleteSoren looks like he had a blast! Peter as well. So, for reals, ladies only wear skirts and paint their breasts to resemble fruits? Isn't that illegal? Wow.
ReplyDeleteYep, Natalie, it is for real. They make a distinction between "nudity" a.k.a. totally naked which is not allowed. But toplessness is fine. It isn't very common but it is an occasional part of the scene (Peter said "I only saw 2 boobs, er wait, I guess it was two people so that would technically be 4 boobs.")
ReplyDeleteThere are also sometimes hugely pg women with their bellies painted (but they usually have their tops on!) The best one I ever say had a baby in the womb painted on her big ol' belly.
That really is such a great video. It makes me want to come play with you guys all summer in Oregon! But where's the final photo of Soren passed out in his carseat on the way home???
ReplyDeleteCourtney - Is is so funny that you asked about the missing photo of Soren passed out in the car...because believe me it did happen! The funniest part was that Peter had his seat tilted all the way back and was also passed out. It was such a perfect picture of my two zonked out guys that I really wanted to get it...but alas, causing an accident while zooming down the highway at 70 mph didn't seem worth it (but believe me that wasn't an automatic conclusion!)
ReplyDeleteWhere is this festival? I am so there next year. This is right up our alley--painted breasts and all! Ok, so maybe not that far, but seriously I am putting it on my calendar for next year. What great fun! And I also loved the video, nothing better than hippie dancers. I love people watching.
ReplyDeleteBecca - They hold it at the same time every year. It is July 10, 11, 12 next year. You'll love it!
