Wonderful White Christmas

Originally uploaded by apsara711.
We went up to Wenatchee for Christmas. Soren had a great time visiting his grandparents and playing with his cousins who were in town from Hawaii. There was a ton of new snow so he had lots of fun playing in it.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Yesterday on the way to our weekly Thursday breakfast, Soren was chattering away in his car seat. Normally he's pretty quiet as we drive there in the early morning darkness. But yesterday he was really animated. I turned off the radio to see what he was up to and discovered that he was singing. We sing together a lot...or rather I sing to him a lot. Sometimes I pause so he can fill in a word or two, but normally I do most of the song. Well, it appears that he's been listening! In the car he sang the whole song of Row, Row, Row Your Boat! I managed to catch it on video last night...(note the "gently down the street...) ClickHere (Darn it though, for some reason Yahoo will not let me turn these videos sideways...I expect that someday I will understand how to do this correctly, but forgive me for now.)

Why is it that all little kids love to make themselves dizzy? Soren started spinning in circles a few months ago. He figured it out on his own. So many times I'm surprised at how early they figure these things out.

Check out the video. Be sure to watch til the end - that is my favorite part. Spinning

Reading to Lamby...then dancing!

To follow up with the post from the other day, here is a video of it. You'll see that Soren is reading to his lamb, then he wants to show him the tractor and leaves outside. The funny thing is that while this was going on his favorite song came on the radio and he had to start dancing!

Reading to Lamby

Here is Soren doing one of his very favorite activities - Reading!

Catching a bug

When we find bugs in the house we pick them up and put them outside. They seem to come in on the firewood, so it is fairly common to find them inside. The other day Soren asked to put the bug outside, so we told him to put it on a paper (sorry, the video quality is horrendous but the content is worth a chuckle): bug

Then, sorry, the quality gets even worse, but we finally put it on the paper for him and he heads toward the door...bug2

Photo with Santa

After the recent trauma between Soren and Santa Claus, I didn't think we'd get a photo with the two of them this year. But it appears that Soren is slowly warming up to the guy. We still aren't venturing out to brave meeting a real Santa, but for now Soren is content letting Santa sit on Soren's lap!

The Sweet Life

Soren doesn't normally get to eat sweets. I'm amazed though at how often people, especially in stores, ask if they can give him candy or a cookie. I usually politely decline, but I feel kind of bad about it since I know they are just trying to be nice. Yesterday one of the Salvation Army bell ringers asked if she could give him a lollipop. This time I said OK.

He carried the wrapped lollipop all through the grocery store while we shopped and didn't seem to even realize he had it in his hand. But when we were in the car I heard him in the back messing with the wrapping. A few minutes later he had the wrapping off. I wasn't sure if he knew that it was something to eat so I just let him be to see what happened.

Another 10 minutes or so passed with not much action, but then I looked and noticed that he had the lollipop leaning against his lip. Clearly it was only a matter of time at this point. Sure enough, a short time later, I hear this little sound from the back seat, he said...

"mmmmm, tasty..."

Going Movies!

We had a big weekend - Soren peed and pooped on the potty! I'm not sure who was prouder - him or me. LOL. But we were all just beaming with that accomplishment. We're not technically potty training, but if he asks to go on the potty we encourage it.

And, once again he just blew me away with some of the things he is saying. As you know, he's a total chatter box. But check these conversations out:

He picked up a small bag that is similar in shape to Peter's raquetball bag.
Soren: Bye. See you.
Me: Ok, bye. Where are you going?
Soren: Playing raquetball.
Me: Ok, have fun!
A few minutes pass and I go to see him dragging his bag so that he can go to the garage, presumably to get in the car. Then, a few minutes later he comes back to me:
Soren: Coming back!

Then, how about this one. He found a small square of paper on the floor.
Soren: Ticket!
Me: Great! You found a ticket!
Soren: Bye bye. (as he heads back to the door)
Me: Where are you going?
Soren: Going movies.
Me: Bye Bye.
He came back a few minutes later.
Me: Oh, did you watch the movie?
Soren: Mmmm (the only word this child will not say is "yes", he just says mmmm instead)
Me: And what was the movie about?
Soren: Camels!

It happens so often that he talks about things that we can't believe he has an understanding of. It usually turns out that somewhere in one of his books, there is a some sort of mention of it. In this case, he has a book that shows a grandpa taking a grandchild to the movies. But still, the extent of what this book says about the movies is "Grandpas hold your hand, and let you hold the tickets." I probably pointed out that they were at the movies. But still it feels like such a leap to me for him to find a ticket and pretend to be going to the movies himself.

But heck, while we're at it...isn't he a cutey?!

Stinky toot!

We have finally closed on the 4-plex investment property! We've been earmarking this investment for Soren's college fund, so that feels pretty good to get in line. Soren came with us to the title company. Clearly they've dealt with kids before because they had an assortment of toys for him to play with while we were signing. He was coloring up at the conference table with us. The title lady started handing us papers and Soren looked at her and said "helpful lady", which she thought was so sweet. We continued to sign the documents and he colored quietly, then he looked up and announced "STINKY TOOT!" And sure enough, wouldn't you know it, that kid had produce a fart stinky enough to clear the room!

The amazing things mama can do!

Soren helped me with with all the Christmas decorations last weekend. So all things that are pretty about Christmas he attributes to me now. Yesterday we had a lovely dusting of snow outside. Soren looked outside and said "Pretty snow. Mama made it." Dang, I'm good! I did break it to him that I didn't actually make it though. I thought he got the point, but this morning he looked outside and said "Pretty snow. Dada made it." Do you think it is too early for an explanation on meteorology?

Traumatized by Santa Claus!

We were at the mall early on Saturday and Santa was just getting set up. Soren and I were standing to the side and I was telling him about Santa. He was totally ok with it and pretty interested. Then Santa turned around and saw Soren and said something totally inocuous like "good morning little boy". Soren totally freaked! He jumped like he'd received a jolt of electrity, his arms flew up in the air and he took off running! Of course, since he was so frantic he crashed to the ground and just lay there bawling. I picked him up and tried to calm him down. Poor Santa felt terrible, but who could have seen that coming? The best part was that Santa tried to make it up to Soren by giving him a sheet of stickers. Soren was still sniffling, but he took the stickers and said "Thank you Santa Claus" (even without my prompting him!)

When I was setting up the Christmas decorations at home, Soren wouldn't even touch the Santa Claus decorations. I don't think we'll be getting his picture taken with Santa this year!

Some of our favorite Croatia photos

Skinny dipping in the Adriatic.

In Dubrovnik we made a point of scouting out the prime nap spots. Every morning we'd stop by the Hemingway Cafe and Soren would sack out on the couch while Peter and I would sip our drinks and watch the people walk by. The intention was to find a good nap location for Soren, but clearly he wasn't the only one who needed it!

Our first day of blogging...

Well, we've been meaning to do this for awhile now. You see, Soren just has so much that he wants you all to know. He's pretty good at chattering now, but his typing skills still aren't up to much so he said he's willing to rely on us to get the word out. (Little does he know that we are sure to post many embarrassing stories and photos!)

Anyway, welcome to our blog.

How about starting with a photo:

big onion

Pretty impressive, eh? That is one of the Walla Walla onions that Peter grew this year. Soren is now saying that someday he hopes that he grows to be as big as an onion. Wait til he sees the pumpkin that will be finished soon!
