Heading back towards Base Camp, Video from Eric
Some of the expeditions summited today! The prince from Bahrain and a 19-year old Pakistani guy (setting the record for the youngest Pakistani ever to summit Everest) were among those who summited. They are still pretty high on the mountain, so not a great deal of detail yet (or photos), but I imagine there will be a lot more news about all that soon. Some reports are saying that as many as 70 people may have summited today, more are likely tomorrow.
Peter is still in Pheriche with plans to leave tomorrow. It will take him two days to get back to Everest Base Camp, roughly 4 hours of walking tomorrow, plus another 6-ish hours the next day. Things are tentatively set for a summit bid starting on May 15.
I'm penciling that out...my rough calculations have the calendar looking something like this:
May 15, Base Camp to Camp 2
May 16, Rest at Camp 2
May 17, To Camp 3
May 18, To Camp 4
May 19, Final push to summit and return to camp 4
May 20, To camp 2
May 21, Return to Everest Base Camp
Eric captured a video early in their trek of a relief map that shows the terrain and layout of the villages on the way to Everest Base Camp and the high camps on the way to the summit. As they head back from the lower villages, this gives a good sense of where they are...and where they are headed!
