VooDoo Put the Spell on Us

Voo Doo Donut is a Portland institution. 2010-09-26 17.32.23 When my friend Courtney came to town, we had to take her. It was the first visit for us too. Can you believe that this is the line at 4 pm on a Sunday afternoon? They said it is ALWAYS at least this long. 2010-09-26 17.31.45 But after about 45 minutes we too had our own pink box. 2010-09-26 18.10.51 And we let the sugar coma begin! 2010-09-26 18.11.41 Courtney is pretty awesome. She's a paper engineer! Have you ever heard of such a thing? sept oct 079 Did you ever consider just how those awesome pop-up books get created? sept oct 073 She rates as high as a rock star in Soren's mind. sept oct 071

Sailing on the Columbia River

Yesterday was a perfect fall day. Warm and sunny. Perfect for sailing on the Columbia river with some of my work colleagues.

Soren even managed to find his dream boat right in the marina!

It is Either Rocks in the Washing Machine, or...

While Soren doesn't often nap any more, we do sometimes put him down for a bit of "quiet time." Looks like Peter put him down for some quiet time after a bit of fun in a gravel pile somewhere!

Soren's First Day of Kindergarten

Today was Soren's first day of Kindergarten. It wasn't quite the big transition for him that it is for most kids sincee is class is for 3-6 year olds and ends with the Kindergarten year. But he was so happy to be back to see his awesome teacher and playing with his friends.

The Colorado Trip, Quandry Peak

We woke up one morning in Colorado all feeling ready to take on a 14,000 ft mountain.

colorado 299

Five years old seems like about the right age to bag your first serious peak, right?

colorado 305

Especially when that peak doesn't require any technical expertise.

colorado 361

I will say though, that there was a bit of bribery involved in getting Soren to keep walking! The promise of a stop at the toy store was a good motivator.

colorado 357

And these stunning beauties were some good inspiration too.

colorado 342

When we lived in Colorado, I could probably count on two hands the number of times we even saw mountain goats.

colorado 335

But to have them so curious to check us out was awesome! (And, slightly unverving!)

colorado 338

But they came in peace.

colorado 341

And we carried on in our quest for the summit. Soren learned another great benefit of big hikes: lots of high sugar treats!

colorado 351

Even if you have to huddle down to stay out of the wind.

colorado 353

My boots, however, were not movitvated by the promise of a trip to the toy store. And they chose this moment to completely disintegrate.

colorado 349

Yeah, they were old. They looked fine before the hike. But the glue had apparently destabilized over the years and the soles just plum fell off both boots!

colorado 362

Soren started crying when we told him we'd have to turn back just 1,000 feet from the summit. But they we told him that because he didn't cause us to turn around that he'd still get the prize at the toy store.

The Colorado Trip, Part III

Amanda and I loaded up the boys for a bike ride. We rode from Breckenridge to Frisco, which is *mostly* downhill. Amanda had Luke on a tag-along. I had Riley and Soren in a trailer.

colorado 273

Believe me, I knew every single moment we venture away from the *mostly* downhill parts. Holy burning thighs!

colorado 278

Of course we stopped of along the ride to investigate the interesting sites, which included a really cool teepee.

colorado 274

You know, 'cause it is important to take time to smell the flowers.
