Lots of Fun in Savannah!

Part of the fun of these business trips is that sometimes we can add in excursions that we might otherwise not have gotten to do. A trip to Savannah is one of those excursions. As much history and reputation as Savannah has, it is hard to end up all the way across the country in this small, out of the way town. But being Atlanta makes a weekend jaunt really feasible.

We arrived last night to our quaint (if tiny) hotel in the historic district. Awesome location. Soren immediately wanted to jump on all the tour trolleys whizzing around town, but it was pretty late, so we put him off on that until this morning. We did a tour of the town by trolley this morning. What a beautiful and fascinating place. I'm not sure that Soren memorized any of the interesting details our guide passed along, but he sure liked riding on the trolley. Especially when the guide rang the bell.

We spent most of the rest of the day wandering around town. Checking out the sights. Like the beautiful horses and carriages:
We did fit in quite a few breaks in the air-conditioned coffee shops and soda fountains too.
And we took a good look at some of the more interesting architectural details:
Savannah is full of beautiful, tree-filled squares.
And when we got tired of all the heat and walking we took a break in our hotel.
And had a refreshing dip in the rooftop pool. Look at the beautiful view!
Soren insisted on stripping down completely upon exiting the pool. I pretty much had to wrestle him to the ground to get a towel wrapped around him so he wouldn't be streaking through the hotel hallways on the way back to the room...
Although the towel didn't make it all the way back to the room!
After a nice nap (not just for Soren!) we headed back out for a small ferry ride across the river. There are all sorts of options for paddle boat tours, dinner cruises and the like, but we just wanted to get out on a boat. And this free ferry that just transports you across the river was brightly painted and caught Soren's eye. So we thought we'd just take a quick there-and-back trip to get a ride on the boat. It was fun and we enjoyed it, but when we got off, Soren looked around and asked, "Is this the same place we got on?" When we told him that indeed it was you could see that he was bewildered at the lack of logic in getting on a ferry and not actually going somewhere. He replied, "That makes none sense!"
The historic district of Savannah is up on a bluff, so when you leave the river area you need to climb some pretty steep stairs!
Then, dinner at the Pirates' House restaurant, matey! Their children's menu could be folded into a pirate's hat!
So of course we all needed to get in on the game!
But, I guess it isn't too surprising, the Pirate's House had real pirates walking around. Oy. The restaurant was set up like a big old house with lots smaller rooms. There were about 20 people eating in the room we were in. We enjoyed a lovely meal and after he finished Soren was walking around the table. There was a group of about 10 women at the table next to us celebrating someone's birthday. So of course the pirate came to entertain them. But he made a grand and loud entrance and scared the living daylights out of Soren! Soren was howling in terror! The pirate was trying to apologize. I was trying to calm Soren down. But he just wasn't having it. Soren was absolutely furious. I mean really, really furious. He totally chewed out the pirate! "That is not nice! You should not scare people! People are eating here!" I was actually shocked at how articulate he could be in spite of the terror. He had tears rolling down his face, but he wouldn't back down one iota and let that pirate off the hook for scaring him.
Poor guy. I finally just had to take him outside to calm down. We talked a lot about where pirates might be in this town (only in the restaurant.) But I have to say that part of me is really proud at how well he defended himself.

  3. Your true self comes out - Amy with a handle-bar mustache. Poor Soren being scared by a pirate. That's pretty brave of him to stand up to a scary pirate!

  4. That's great about Soren setting that pirate straight! Zen's been known to give a pirate or two the stink-eye. Savannah is lovely isn't it?
