Hotel Fun

We're in Seattle. Sure, it is a great city but the best part of traveling is jumping on hotel beds!

The Binky Fairy, Part 3 (subtitle: The Binky Fairy Makes a Plan for Leaving Better Presents to get Soren's Interest Again)

Well, after the trauma of the first binkyless night Soren has proclaimed quite clearly, and repeatedly:

"I have enough presents."

Sigh. He has no interest in leaving another binky out for the Binky Fairy. Clearly more drastic measures are needed. Not sure what those drastic measures will be. ("Cold Turkey" doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "Binky Fairy" does, ya know?) I'm determined to get rid of this thing by the time he's three. We have 9 more days... (Goodness, I thought the biological clock tick tocked loudly, but this binky clock counting down is really getting loud!)

The Binky Fairy, Part 2

So, in response to my "could it possibly be this easy?" question...the short answer is "NO!"

About the time I hit "publish this post" button on the blog last night the poor kid just lost it. He was perfectly fine while he was just relaxing in bed, but when he was finally really trying to go to sleep he just couldn't do it. Peter came home from raquetball just as the crying was starting and I'm sure is still wondering just what I'd done to the poor child to get him into such a worked up state. Peter loaded him up with every stuffed animal in the house and that eventually did calm him down. Soren kept saying that his tongue was hurting without his binky (is that heartbreaking or what?)

He did eventually fall asleep but was up again at 4:30 this morning. That in itself is not unsual, usually I just go in and tell him that it isn't time to get up yet and he rolls over, inserts the binky and goes back to sleep. But today he wanted his binky and if that wasn't happening he wanted to see if the Binky Fairy had brought anything. I did let him get up and find the Binky Fair present - new cars for his Thomas trains. Very exciting. He put them back in the bucket and tried to go back to sleep. Not happening. He stayed in his bed for about 20 minutes and then was calling me again. So, he's pretty much been up for the day since then.

He's tired today. Peter said he mostly just sat spacing out during his breakfast.

We'll see if he decides to leave the nap-time binky for the Binky Fairy or wants to keep it. Look out for Binky Fairy, Part 3 - coming soon to a blog near you!

The Binky Fairy, Part 1

Could it possibly be this easy?

I'll let you know tomorrow whether he went the whole night binky-free, or whether he sneaks out to nab the beloved binky before the binky fairy comes! (Thanks to Courtney and Kendell for the great binky fairy suggestion!)

The Secret Reason Soren Got Even Cuter

Ok, so it wasn't actually much of a mystery why Soren suddenly got so much cuter. We all did this weekend because we were all smiling so much!

We had a fabulous weekend in SunRiver. Our kind and generous neighbors lent us the use of their vacation home. And it just so happened to be 80 degrees up there. What was first planned as a ski weekend quickly became a weekend of bike riding, and just strolling around out doors.

Feeding the ducks in the park...

Enjoying some of the benefits of melting snow - puddles!

Strolling to the headwaters of the Metolius River:

Horsing around in the hot tub!

You'll see what Peter enjoyed most: relaxing in the sun!

Soren Has Gotten Even Cuter

It seems to me that Soren has suddenly gotten way cuter than he ever was. I'm certain that I'm being 100% objective and unbiased, and not in anyway influenced by the fact that he looks like my handsome husband (or so everyone says...I still don't quite see it).

Here are some photos I snapped this weekend. You'll see that he curls are coming back again after his Christmas haircut.

Welcome Little Riley Phillip!

My sister Amanda had her baby today. Yippee! Little Riley Phillip came into the world about 2 hours ago. Welcome Riley! Soren is already looking forward to playing with you (or, I'm sure he will be when he wakes up!)

The Hills Are Alive!

Soren loves The Sound of Music and I'm sure by the time he's in kindegarten he's going to be the only child in his class that knows each and every word to the soundtrack. It started when he was in the hospital in Poland and there were so many treatments that bothered him. So I started singing "My Favorite Things" (which he calls "the raindrops on roses song") then we'd talk about all the things that he loves.

Lately he's been really talking about emotions a lot. Especially when he's sad. Here's an excerpt: "Oh no! I'm saaaaaad! (cry, cry, whimper, sob) I'm never going to be happy again! (sob, sniffle, whimper) Whatever am I going to do to get happy?" (No kidding, that really is what he says!)

I told him that he should think about his favorite things, so we talk about what he loves and he makes a list. By the time we come to the second item on the list of his favorite things, he's already smiling.

He also really likes the song Maria. As in how do you solve a problem like Maria. But he isn't content with just singing it. He insists on understanding what the song is all about. So I have to explain why it is unacceptable for a nun to be singing in an abbey. He listens and seems content with my explanations, but how could that possibly make sense to him?

You Know He's Tired When...

We helped Auntie Christine move last weekend. So, it meant that Soren got home a bit later than usual. He had fallen asleep in the car and was upset when I woke him up to get his jammies on when we got home. He was whimpering and crying "I want my binky, I want my binky." Until I pointed out that it was in his mouth!

We are planning on getting rid of the binky when he turns three. Only a few more weeks. I have to admit that I'm dreading it already. If anyone has any suggestions on a way to make this easier, let me know!

When Soren Grows Up...

Yesterday we were reading a book about a little girl who carried a doctor's bag around the park because she wanted to be a doctor when she grew up. She helped sick dolls and pets. He wanted to read it again, and again, and again. That is unusual for him, he usually just wants to go to go on to the next book. So, I wondered what it was about the book that he liked so much. So I asked...

Me: Soren, do you want to be a doctor when you grow up?
Soren: No.
Me: Then what do you want to be?
Soren: A tiger.

Soren likes to spell his name. People often aren't sure of his name when he introduces himself. They often assume it is "Shaun" or maybe "Sawyer" and one guy even called him "Roger" (which still makes me laugh to think of me having a son called Roger). Anyway, spelling it comes in handy. He's pretty proud to spell out "S O R E N".

Tonight Peter asked him "Can you spell your last name?"

"Yes," he replied confidently, "J..N...S...Peter!"...looks like we'll have to continue writing his name on his clothes for awhile yet.
