Four on Friday, AC Gilbert House Science Fair

Last weekend we went to the AC Gilbert House Science fair with our friends Sarah & Elliot.

The very best event of the day was the Mentos & Diet Coke geyser. I must admit that the requirement that the kids wear rain ponchos did seem a little bit extreme, but it added to the excitement.

To prove that this is a science museum event, they had specially made Mentos dispensers that attached directly to the top of the 2-liter bottles:

And, wow!, what a display it was! The ponchos were totally needed as the kids were bathed in a downpour of soda!

Viva la science!

Three on Thursday, Week 8: Starfruit, You Disappoint!

We're a fruit loving family here. What's not to love about all the colorful varieties of sweet and juicy goodness?

Soren spotted a starfruit at the grocery store last weekend and begged to try one. Despite my misgivings, I relented. I'd tried starfruit once before and since then have counted starfruit as the only non-delicious fruit.

But they look so promising!

And cutting them up, they look even better. What lovely little bits of star-shaped beauty, eh?

But the moment of truth did arrive...

And while it didn't engender quite the photo-worthy look of horror that our past home grown orange tasting session did, the verdict was clear: starfruit are yucky.

Three on Thursday, Week 7: Painting

I picked up a good deal online for some time at a local ceramics studio. Soren and I did this about a year ago in Corvallis and had a great time. We did this time too. He chose a turtle with a secret hiding spot under the shell. Still no word on what he is so eager to hide in there.

Picking the brushes.

And then the painting begins...

...paying special attention to those small details.

We pick up the finished, fired, work this weekend!

(Photography note: sometimes I swear I'm just going back to auto white balance. Yes, I know I could shoot raw and edit it, but that just isn't going to happen. I'm trying to simplify my photography process, edit less, in order to just take more photos! This studio was a nightmare though - lightbulbs in the back, and natural light in the front of the store. So, that first photo is just wrong. Cute, but wrong. :-))

Three on Thursday, week 6: Prepping for V-day

Preparing for Valentine's Day has been a lot of fun this year. What a difference a year makes! Last year it was fairly painful to get Soren to sit down and write the name of each of his classmates on their valentines. This year, I handed him the list and he checked them off as he went through them - and enjoyed it!

Lost & Found

Soren and I recently had a conversation about how lost and founds work, and how if you had your things labelled it would be easier for someone to get them back to you.

Later that day we were coloring and writing. He was silent for a little while, then he slapped this note on himself and smiled big.

Three on Thursday, Week 5: Urban Adventure Day

Soren had the day off on Monday, so I took the day off too. We spent the day out looking for adventure.

Stop #1 was Sky High Sports. I've been wanting to get there every since I heard about it. We had so much fun! We both jumped for pretty much two hours straight...and I'm still sore two days later!

Stop #2 was IKEA. We recently got rid of Soren's bunk bed and converted that to a playroom. We moved him into what was once a guest room. His playroom needed a table in it. So we wandered the vast IKEA showrooms until Soren found exactly what he wanted. (Wow, did he ever have strong opinions on the subject!)

Stop #3 was the Portland Aerial Tram. We had to rush in order to make it there before it got dark (we had a really big day!) but were able to ride the tram up and look out at the great views of Portland.

Soren fell asleep in the car on the way home. And I was sound asleep not too much after getting back. What a fun, fabulous day of adventure.

Pinewood Derby Races

Since this is Soren's first year of Cub Scouts, this was also his first year of Pinewood Derby racing!
His car is in the back on the right, #26. And yes, that is a lego head driving the car.

On your mark, get set, go!

And the crowd roars roars with excitement! (Or something like that.)

His car won the "Varoomer Zoomer" award.
