The Lights of Christmas

Last night, after spending the entire weekend in our jammies (heaven!), we jumped in the car (still in our jammies), hit the Starbucks drivethrough for hot cocoa, and headed to the Keizer Christmas lights neighborhood.

Then we camped under the Christmas tree.

Since we'll be traveling on Christmas day, I told Soren he could open his presents on Christmas Eve. He woke me up at 1 a.m. ready to go! I did make him sleep a few hours longer...but then we dug in.

The Nutcracker

Soren and I went to see The Nutcracker on Sunday. He loved it and now wants to take up ballet.

Tis the Season

I love that this kid is now genuinely able to be an enormous help in preparing the family Christmas cards.

Just in Case...

Even though Soren is becoming more skeptical about Santa's existence ("Mom, I don't think Santa is real...I think it is actually fairies that deliver the presents.") he wasn't yet confident enough in that assertion to skip the Santa visit this weekend. Ho ho ho.

Gingerbread houses

We had friends over to decorate Gingerbread houses today. It was awesome. Though I am convinced that more candy ended up in tummies than on houses. Particulary impressive was Soren's friend who maximized the candy grab by filling the inside of his house with candy. december snow 004

Three on Thursday, Week 26: The Duel

Can you guess what I'm doing here?

It is kind of hard to photograph, but here's a better shot:

And another clue:

Soren is now (gleefully) a two-wheeler rider. No training wheels. So we decided to have a battle to see which of us could sustain our chosen skills longer. Him, bike riding:

Me, hula hooping.

It was an epic battle. Round one (2 minutes, which "we" later determined was just a practice round) went to mom (due to someone's bad run in with some gravel.)

After that small victory I was feeling cocky, certain of my upcoming win. But 8 minutes later, my hula hoop was on the ground, and the small one claimed his victory prize.

There are some very big advantages in holding battles like this during strawberry season:

Good Friends Make You Jump for Joy

My friend Sarah took this picture. Isn't it awesome? Totally shows how much Soren loves playing with his friend Elliot.

Three on Thursday, Week 25: Camping at the Oregon Coast

We went camping with a big group of friends. It was 10,000 kinds of awesome.

Wings of Wonder

Soren and I were looking for a little outing yesterday. He suggested Wings of Wonder, the local butterfly sanctuary. When I looked it up online, I was sad to note that it will be closing permanently next weekend. That confirmed our desire to head out immediately.

June 032

It is about 95 degrees in the enclosed butterfly garden. This feels great for about a minute, and then sweltering for the remaining time. But Soren was utterly undaunted. We stayed in the gardens for far longer than any of the other visitors.

June 039

So many spectacular colors.

June 031

So many lovely creatures.

This last photo makes me smile. Soren snapped it. No photo editting done by me. I changed the camera to auto mode, but somehow he still ended up with this colorized looking image of a butterfly that had attached itself to the leg of a very, very old woman.

Three on Thursday, Week 22: Canoeing on the Lake

My hopes of spending more time down at our local lake this summer are going well so far.

We've parked the canoe lakeside for the summer.

For spontaneous afternoon cruises to "Goose Poose Island."

Portland's 4T Trail

We were looking for a fun family day, so we decided to combine two things in Portland that we'd heard about, but hadn't yet tried.

The first, Soren and I saw on and episode of Man vs. Food. It is the Stepping Stone Cafe in NW Portland, and they are known for their "mancakes."

Stepping stone cafe

In our version of Man vs. Food...the food won!

Properly fortified, we headed up to the zoo for the start of the 4T Trail. The 4T trail is a tour of the diversity of portland via Trail, Tram, Trolley and Train.

The first T: Trail.

Lovely. So amazing how thick the forest can be right in the middle of the city.

Occasionally, we'd exit the forest to cross a street...

...before heading back into the forest again...

The second T: Tram. It never occured to me that the tram could be closed mid-day! But I guess all of Portland may not be as early-rising as our family.

Fortunately, the opened the tram 30 minutes after we got up there.

The third T: the Trolley (which I didn't think to photograph until after we'd climbed off and it was rolling away!)

The final T: the Train. (Note: Soren carrying Peter's new REI backpack which is stuffed with Powell's books! We can't break our Portland habits even while on a new adventure!)

6 hours later: exhausted, adventured-out and back at the beginning! It was a great day.
