Returning Books

So, this isn't a great shot, but I just couldn't resist posting it. When he returned his library books last weekend, Soren paused and said to each one "Good-bye, I really liked reading you."

Vancouver 2010

Shew, what a weekend. I am typing at the computer just to keep from going to bed too early. Truth is, I was ready for bed at 7:30 tonight.

We had such a fun weekend.

We didn't really know what to expect heading to Vancouver in the middle of the Olympic games. We didn't book tickets when they went on sale in 2008 just because it seemed like going there would be so busy, crowded and expensive. But as I started reading this week about the minimal lines crossing the border and the fun events around town...we started talking about it. It helps that we have good friends who live right at the border. So we had an automatic place to stay.

We found that the Olympic spririt is alive and well. There was so much energy and excitement all over town.

olympics 008 copy

We mostly just wandered around town. We looked online for tickets but didn't really see anything that caught our eye. We were by the hockey stadium when the Latvia - Slovakia match was starting...but it would have cost $1,250 for us to go! And I have to say that I'm not that into Slovak hockey!

But there was so much action all over town that it didn't really matter.

olympics 031 copy

Of course we went to see the Olympic Cauldron.

olympics 036 copy

And the Plaza of Nations.

olympics 072 copy

But mostly we just watched people.

olympics 053 copy

Checked out the artwork all around town.

And mingled in the international crowds.

It was a great, spontaneous adventure!

Can You Guess?

We're making a run for it today. Can you guess where?

No real planning, no tickets...and, most likely, no sense. But hey, when the biggest event in the world right now is happening pretty much in your back yard it just seems a little silly to miss it. Doesn't it?

Can you guess where we are going?

Here's a little hint:

I'm taking it as destiny talking to us that I already own a pair of those mittens.

Wish us luck! We'll report back. Of course.

Money, Money, Money

This weekend Soren found some spare change in the house. He always runs to put this in his money box.

Soren: Mom, look! I found some money! How much is it?

Me, looking down at his coins which were apparently left over from our trip: Oh, looks like you found Brazilian money.

Soren: Awesome! Does that mean I can buy a zillion things?

Lovely Day at Silver Falls

Whenever we have out-of-town visitors, Silver Falls State Park is always one of our destinations. Such a spectacular park, can't believe it is so close to us. But we don't take advantage of it often enough ourselves.

On President's Day we were torn between going snowshoeing (so far to drive) and cleaning the house (so boring!) so we compromised and went for a nearby hike at Silver Falls.

Of course this requires lots of Corn Nut fortifications before heading out...

...especially if you will be carrying the family backpack (this arrangement lasted until we got out of the parking lot.)

And on to the waterfalls!

Much of the trail is next to the river...

Can you see Peter and Soren off to the right side of this picture? (They would be the little specks next to the fence.) These waterfalls are HUGE!!

A perfect Pacific Northwest forest kind of hike. Love it.

Smart Grandma

My mom brough Soren some Valentine's Day treats. And then she wisely set it up to avoid a sugar free-for-all. Soren got to choose what went on each day. I think he liked looking forward to the days as much as anything else.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day

A scene that seems to be repeated in our home every year.

Me, calling home to Peter: Hey, it is Valentine's Day this week. Is Soren supposed to bring Valentines to school?

Peter: Oh.... yeah.... I think I read something about that...

Me: Tomorrow is his last day of class before Valentine's Day. Does he need to have Valentines at school tomorrow?

Peter: Uh, yeah, then he probably does.

This conversation then leads to me stopping at whatever store I can get to on my way home from work, choosing some package of Valentines that Soren would have wanted to give his friends, rushing home and knowing that the chances of him writing his name 24 times and putting any personal touches on any cards is about 2.5%.

This year though, we did make a bit of progress. He wrote his own name on two of the cards and put heart stickers on all of them.

I have friends who have posted pictures of the Valentines that that their "child" made. LOL. Looks like I'm definitely not leading Soren in the direction of Martha Stewart craftiness, that is for sure.

Skiing in Austria

Last weekend was our annual company ski trip. This year it was to Austria. Since most of my colleagues are from around Europe, this is practically a local trip for them. The three Americans, however, are dragging on the floor for a good portion of the weekend. And just when we start to recover from the jet is time to come home!

But it is so worth it. So much fun. We stayed in Krimml, a tiny little village.

2010 austria ski trip 038

While we were there it snowed almost 18 inches one night, making for lots of lovely fresh powder everywhere.

2010 austria ski trip 036

Isn't this cool? It appeared to be some sort of a tall fountain or pipe that they'd use to create this cool ice structure.

2010 austria ski trip 040

We skiied for two days.

Everyone from my company wore matching Superman t-shirts!

So we were pretty easy to pick out from the rest of the crowds!

Swimming Lessons Return

Soren started swimming lessons again recently.

It isn't all smiles though, poor kid hates getting his eyes in the water!

But as long as he's not doing a bob, he's quite happy to exclaim "Mom, I'm swimming!!" as his teacher floats him across the pool.

Peter and I apparently aren't the only family members who will stop everything for a good book. Getting our family through Barnes & Nobles can be a day-long affair...
