Woo Hoo! Camparoo at the Zoo!

This was the weekend for the annual Camparoo at the zoo! We did it last year too, and were so happy to be able to do it again this year. It is such a great event and so exciting to get to go behind the scenes of a working zoo.

All the campers set up tents on the concert lawn.
Can you spot our tiny bright purple tent near the middle of this photo? Peter is standing next to it. I think this shows that we are pretty seriously in denial. First, in denial that we actually need to keep our high-tech lightweight backpacking tent. Secondly, that we can fit a family of three in it comfortably! I need to get to K-Mart to buy one of those cheap 7 bedroom tents that I always see on display! I will say that we had tons of kids compliment our tent though this weekend - I think it looked like a race car parked next to a field full of RVs!
Like last year, we took a tour of the kitchen area for the animals. And we checked out all the different things that the animals like to eat.
And even tasted some monkey treats!
Soren deciding if the monkey treats were any good.
The verdict:
We didn't however, sample anything from this recipe for carnivorous birds!
Soren made some cookies for the Sun Bears. First you mash 'em up into little balls...
Then press 'em onto cookie sheets.
6 a.m. wake up in the tent...
How many kids have gotten to tour the zoo in their jammies!? I think that is the very best thing about the camparoo - walking around the zoo when there are no other guests there. The animals seem to be so much more active than when we visit during the day, and having the place to your self feels so cool!
Plus, no lines for all the favorite ride-on toys!
We love Camparoo at the Zoo!

  1. SO JEALOUS! That looks like so much fun. Soren is brave to be sampling monkey treats.

  2. Wow! The zoo in p.j.'s. We were at the zoo after hours and the animals were CRAZY active. It was fun! Oh, about the back-packing tent denial. We've been there. We have a nice mountain hardware, and it fit 3 ok. Kate was born, and we managed to squish 4 in. But not for long. Sadly, we had to upgrade. Kelty makes a great family tent with a full-coverage rain fly.
