You Know He's Tired When...

We helped Auntie Christine move last weekend. So, it meant that Soren got home a bit later than usual. He had fallen asleep in the car and was upset when I woke him up to get his jammies on when we got home. He was whimpering and crying "I want my binky, I want my binky." Until I pointed out that it was in his mouth!

We are planning on getting rid of the binky when he turns three. Only a few more weeks. I have to admit that I'm dreading it already. If anyone has any suggestions on a way to make this easier, let me know!

  1. Oh, I hear ya! The three mark is it for us too. We are continually telling him that three year olds do not use pacifiers. I have been reading a little bit and some people say you should do something like the tooth fairy, but it is the binky fairy and the last night you leave it on the window sill and when they wake up the binky will be gone and a present will be in it's place. May work a little better for us since Cal has some concept of the tooth fairy.

The last few days I have put my foot down with no exceptions. He has to take it out in the morning and if he wants to use it he has to go sit in his bed. I have done this before, but have always given in, but we are adjusting and it has only taken two days for him to stop asking for it as much. He usually only wants it when hurt or tired.

Good luck and let me know if you come across any good ideas as well!

  2. We took away Lorelei's binky in January, about 3 months shy of 3. She was down to 2 at that point, one of which was unusable due to biting holes. She was only allowed to having them in her bed too so they were just for naps and bedtime by that point.

We started talking about the binky fairy and told her when she was ready she could put her binkies outside her door and the binky fairy would know to come and leave a gift in their place. She started toying with the idea and I finally secretly cut a small hole in the final remaining binky. Once she discovered she couldn't suck on either one, she decided she was ready for the binky fairy and carried them to the hallway.

The next morning there were 2 presents outside her door. Bedtime was rough for a couple of nights but then we just fell into a new routine. Truthfully the anticipation of it was far worse than getting rid of them, though the first 2 days weren't that much fun.

However, naps went completely out the window the day the binkies went away. Seriously. And that's a big bummer. But it's all over now and all in all, it wasn't that bad. Good luck!
